A Chatrandom alternative that writes its price list down

Every site in this category calls itself free, and every one of them costs something somewhere. This one runs in a browser tab with no account and no install — and the exact point where the free part ends is set out further down the page instead of waiting for you in the middle of a conversation.

01 / WHAT IT IS

What Chatrandom says it's

Chatrandom is random video chat in a browser. Their own page describes allowing your webcam and pressing Start to be matched with a stranger, filtering by country, choosing to chat with women, guys or couples, and pressing Next when you want the following person. It calls the chat anonymous with no sign-up required for most users, describes automated AI moderation alongside block and report tools, mentions an app you can download, and says the site is free to use with no payment required. It prints two numbers as well: around thirty-two thousand people online at the moment we looked, and over twenty million joined in total.

That's their description and it's deliberately left in their words, checked in September 2026. We compete with them, so anything we told you about how their product behaves on a given night would be worth roughly what you would expect. What we can write about honestly is this site, which is what the rest of the page does.

02 / THE WORD

What the word "free" is doing on a page like this one

Look along this whole category and the front pages all say the same three things, in roughly the same order and often in roughly the same typeface: free, no payment required, start chatting now.

None of them are lying, and it's worth being clear about that before going further. The word is accurate at the moment you arrive, which is the moment it's aimed at. Every one of these products does cost real money to run, though. Bandwidth for live video isn't cheap and moderation is people, so somewhere behind the free front door there's an arrangement that pays for it, and the useful question was never whether one exists but where you personally are going to meet it.

We aren't going to tell you where Chatrandom's is. Their page doesn't say, the only figures we found came from review sites that copy each other, and guessing at a competitor's business model in public is exactly the kind of thing this page has no business doing. What we can do is stop being coy about our own, which is the next section but one.

03 / SIDE BY SIDE

WhoChat Live next to Chatrandom

The right-hand column is theirs, read off chatrandom.com in September 2026. Anything on that side that only they can see from the inside stays marked as something they say, not as something we're vouching for.

04 / THE BILL

Exactly what costs money here, and when you meet it

Green is free. Pink is the line. There's one line, and this is where it sits.

  • Opening the site

Costs nothing and asks for nothing. No card, no trial, no email, no form standing between you and the camera permission.

  • Your first matches

You start with a set number of free video matches. Not unlimited: a number, spent one match at a time.

  • Text matching

Does not draw on that number at all. If you want to be here without spending anything, this is the lane that stays open.

  • Talk time in a call

Each call carries a stretch of free minutes. When it is running out you get told, instead of finding out when the room closes on you.

  • After that

Video pairing runs on coins. You can buy them, and you can also collect free ones from the reward centre on a timer, which is slower and genuinely free.

  • Skipping

A skip is just the next match starting. It is the same motion as being matched in the first place.

No price is printed here. That's deliberate and it isn't evasion: what a coin costs and how many a match takes are set on the server and they move, so a figure typed into this page in September has a decent chance of being untrue by March — and a stale price is worse than no price at all, because a visitor reads it as a promise and not as a snapshot. The shape holds still. So the shape is what gets written down.

Here is the part a comparison page isn't supposed to say out loud. If what you want is unlimited free video and nothing else, you'll hit the line here, and there are products in this category where you would hit it later or in a different place. Go and find out. We would rather you knew that on the way in than discovered it forty minutes later and concluded we had hidden it. What we're actually selling on this page is that we told you.

05 / STRAIGHT

Four things this site won't do for you

It won't let you pick. The pairing runs random. You press start and you take whoever comes up, which is either the entire appeal of this format or the reason you bounce off it inside a minute, and both of those are reasonable reactions to have.

It won't stay free forever. Section four is the whole of it. The free part is real and it has an end, and both of those sentences are true at once.

It won't sit on your home screen. There's no app-store listing for this site. Nothing to install and nothing to uninstall, and also nothing to tap tomorrow evening without having to remember the name first.

It won't tell you how many people are here. We don't publish a figure. If the size of the pool is the thing that decides it for you, then somebody else has given you a number and we've given you none, and you should weigh that honestly rather than take our word for why we did it.

06 / IN RETURN

What the free part actually gets you

A face, in about the time it takes to say yes

The search starts early. While the camera permission dialog is still sitting there waiting on you to read it, the matcher has already gone looking, so by the time you click Allow it has had a second's head start, which is most of the reason this feels faster than it has any right to.

Nothing to fill in, nothing left behind

No sign-up screen, no confirmation email, no profile to assemble first. A guest session is created quietly while the page loads. Close the tab and that's the end of it, with no account of yours in a different state than it was this morning.

Three modes, chosen before the match runs

Video, voice, or text. Picking up front spares everyone the negotiation. It's also why text can be its own lane rather than a crippled version of the real thing. A text match is a different kind of match, and it's cheaper to run, which is why it doesn't draw on the video allowance.

One room, two people, no audience

Nobody is watching. There's no lobby and no queue, and the two-person shape that leaves you with behaves so differently from group video that it has a page of its own instead of a line in a feature list.

07 / HOW

Three steps, and none of them is a form

  1. 01

    Choose video, voice or text

Before anything else, because it decides what kind of room you end up in. Text doesn't draw on the video allowance, which matters if you're here to look around and not to commit an evening.

  2. 02

    Allow the camera once

The same browser prompt any site uses for this. Underneath it the search has already begun, so the waiting is happening while you read rather than after.

  3. 03

    Talk, or move on

Their video takes the frame, yours goes to a corner. If it isn't going anywhere, skip. Most people go through several before one lands, and that's the format behaving normally rather than a verdict on you or on them.

08 / RULES

The short list, and what enforcement looks like in practice

  • Eighteen and over, enforced not declared. An account reading younger loses its session on the spot. No warning, no benefit of the doubt, no review afterwards — because a review takes hours, and the only alternative to acting hastily on this particular question is acting too late.
  • This is a general-audience site. Not an adult one. That single decision is where most of the rest of this list comes from, and it's also why people who came looking for something else tend to leave within a minute or two.
  • Consent to talk isn't consent to be filmed. Screen capture is trivial and always has been. Ease has never once been the same thing as permission, and a person who agreed to thirty seconds of conversation didn't agree to a file.
  • Leave first, then report. In that order. Arguing inside the room gives the other person another few minutes of your evening, and filing afterwards takes one tap with nothing to type, because the session is attached to the report already.

Two things make that list work differently from how you might assume. There's no recording, so nothing can be reviewed after the fact. Enforcement runs on reports and on what the system can read from a room while it's open. And a report costs the person filing it nothing, which is the only reason people bother, because the usual alternative is a form that asks you to describe an incident you would rather stop thinking about.

Does that catch everything? It doesn't, and you should be suspicious of anyone in this category who tells you their version does. What it does is make the cost of reporting almost zero and the cost of being reported real, which over time moves the same small set of accounts out of the pool.

09 / QUESTIONS

The questions that come up before somebody switches

Is WhoChat Live connected to Chatrandom in any way?

No. Different site, different company, no relationship at all. Chatrandom is their trademark and it appears here because it is what people type when they are looking for something in this category, and answering that plainly seemed better than pretending the name does not exist.

So is this site free or not?

Both halves are true and neither one is the whole thing. Free to open, free to start, free for as long as text matching keeps you interested. Then there is a line, and an evening on video will take you to it. We put the entire shape of it in section four instead of burying it, because you are going to find that line either way and it is better for everybody if you find it now.

Can I filter by country or gender here the way Chatrandom describes?

Not today. Nothing narrows the pool here. Whoever the matcher has free at that second is the person who arrives, and that is the whole mechanism. So if narrowing is the actual reason you went looking for an alternative in the first place, a product that leads with filtering is simply the better tool, and you should use it rather than take our word for anything on this page.

Do I have to install anything?

No. This runs in the browser tab you already have open, on whatever device it is open on. There is no listing in any app store, which cuts both ways: nothing to install and nothing to delete, but also no icon sitting on your home screen to pull you back tomorrow.

Why not just show how many people are online?

Because a number printed by the people who benefit from it is not something you can check, and that stays true when the people printing it are us. Press start and count the seconds instead. That measurement is yours, it costs you nothing, and unlike a counter it is about the hour you actually use this rather than about the hour somebody chose to screenshot.

What happens to the conversation afterwards?

Nothing, and that is meant literally. The room closes, the other person cannot reach you, the matcher will not put the two of you back together, and there is no history screen for either of you to reopen. It is how the thing is built rather than a promise stacked on top of it.

Is there an age limit?

Eighteen and over, and it is enforced, not declared. An account that reads as younger than that loses the session immediately: no warning first, no benefit of the doubt, and no careful review afterwards, because a careful review takes hours and the alternative to being hasty here is being too late.

What do I do if somebody behaves badly?

Leave the room, then report. One tap, no typing. The session travels attached to the report, so there is nothing for you to describe, timestamp or prove. Reports land somewhere a person looks. Is that a perfect system? No, and anyone in this category claiming theirs is perfect has told you something about their marketing rather than about their moderation.
