A HOLLA video chat alternative that opens in a browser tab

Same idea: one tap, one stranger, both cameras on. The difference is that there's nothing to download, nothing to sign up for, and nothing sitting on your phone afterwards. Allow the camera and you're in a room with somebody.

01 / WHAT IT IS

What HOLLA is, if you landed here without knowing

HOLLA is a random video chat app. You open it, tap once, and a stranger appears. Then you either talk or you move on, which is the same thirty-second loop the entire category runs on. Their own site describes interest-based video matching, voice chat and text chat with stickers, says the basic live video chat is free, sells a subscription called HOLLA Plus that it describes as carrying the advanced filters, and claims people in more than 190 countries.

That's their description, not ours. We left it as theirs on purpose. We're a competing site, and anything we told you about how fast their matching really is, or how well their moderation holds up on a bad night, would be worth precisely what you would expect from the people trying to get you to close their tab and open ours instead. So we didn't write it. What follows is about this site.

02 / WHY LOOK

Why "alternative" usually means "something that just opens"

An app is a commitment. Small, but real: a store account, an install, an icon on your home screen, permissions granted permanently rather than for one evening, and a thing you then have to remember to delete once you're finished with it. That's a lot of ceremony. All of it lands before the first hello, for a product you were curious about for ten minutes on a Tuesday night.

Then there's the plain case of the wrong device. You're on a laptop. The thing you want is on a phone. Nobody picks up a second device, hunts down the store listing, waits out a download over hotel wifi and signs in somewhere new, purely to find out whether a random video chat product is worth ten minutes. Most people just give up at that point, which is more or less the reason this page exists.

A browser skips all of it. You click. The prompt appears and you say yes, and the genuine worst case here is that ninety seconds later you close the tab again with nothing about your phone, your storage, your notification list or any account you own in a different state from the one it was in when you arrived. Then it's over.

03 / SIDE BY SIDE

WhoChat Live next to HOLLA

The right-hand column is theirs. Every line in it comes from HOLLA's own site, checked in September 2026, and where something is a claim rather than a fact we can see for ourselves, it's labelled as their claim.

04 / THE TRADE

What you give up by staying in a browser

Choosing who comes up. The match is random. You press start and you get who you get, which is the part of this format that people either love immediately or bounce off inside a minute. If sitting down and picking is what you actually came for, an app that sells you that as a feature will suit you better than this will.

The app-store layer of effects. Beauty filters, AR masks, that whole shelf of things to put on your face. A browser can do some of it, a native app can do more of it, and anyone telling you the web has completely caught up on that front is overselling. We aren't going to.

Being pinged later. No icon, no notification. Nothing pulls you back in tomorrow evening the way an installed app is designed to, and depending entirely on what kind of week you're having, that's either the thing you just lost or the whole reason you came looking for a browser version in the first place.

05 / IN RETURN

What you get for accepting that trade

Nothing installed, nothing left behind

Close the tab and it's over. Really over. No app sitting in a folder on your home screen, no store account attached to it, and no leftover permissions to go hunting for in a settings menu three weeks from now when you've forgotten what it was called.

It works on the device you're already using

Laptop, desktop, phone, the tablet somebody left on the sofa. A big screen wins. Faces read properly at that size, the lighting in an ordinary room is usually enough without anyone thinking about it, and you aren't holding a camera out at arm's length for twenty minutes trying to keep your own chin out of the bottom of the frame.

Nothing to fill in before you start

There's no profile screen here. Not a short one, not a skippable one. The thing doesn't exist, which is deliberate, not unfinished, because that screen is precisely where most people abandon a product like this one before they ever reach a single conversation.

Skip is one tap

Dead air, bad light, somebody you would rather not talk to. Move on. Skipping is the same motion as being matched in the first place: one tap, and the search for the next person has started before the old room has finished closing.

06 / HOW

Starting from this page takes about ten seconds

  1. 01

    Press the button

Nothing stands between it and the camera. No account step, no interstitial, no email. A guest session gets created for you quietly in the background while the page is still settling, and that's the whole reason there's nothing here for you to type.

  2. 02

    Say yes to the camera

Your browser asks once. While that little dialog is still sitting there waiting on you, the search for somebody to pair you with has already started.

  3. 03

A room opens with one other person in it

Their video fills the frame and yours drops into the corner. Talk, or type in the side panel if the room around you is loud. Then it either goes somewhere or it doesn't. Both of those are fine, and most people skip a handful of times before anything sticks, which is the format working, not you being bad at it.

07 / RULES

The rules, and what actually happens when somebody breaks one

  • 18+. If you aren't eighteen, this isn't a site for you. Sessions that read as underage get pulled instead of warned, and that judgement gets made quickly instead of carefully. When there's doubt, that's the side to be wrong on.
  • Clothes on. General-audience, not adult: a distinction that decides most of what's on this list. Take them off and the room closes.
  • Don't record whoever you got. They agreed to talk to you once, which is a different thing from agreeing to exist in a file on your machine afterwards. That capturing a browser window is easy has never made it consented to.
  • Report instead of arguing. The report travels with the session attached, so there's nothing for you to describe, timestamp or prove. Leave the room first. File it second.

None of that runs off a recording. There isn't one. It runs off what gets reported and what the system can read live. Is that airtight? No, and claiming otherwise to somebody who has already spent an evening on a product in this category would just cost us the rest of the page. Here is the version that holds up: reports land somewhere a person looks, and repeat offenders stop getting back in.

08 / QUESTIONS

Questions people ask when they're comparing the two

Is WhoChat Live affiliated with HOLLA?

No. WhoChat Live is an independent site with no connection to HOLLA or HOLLA Group, and nothing here is endorsed by them. HOLLA is their trademark and it is used on this page only to describe what people are comparing us against.

Is there a HOLLA web version I can use without installing anything?

Their own site is built around the app and sends you to the app stores to get it, which is what we could see when we checked in September 2026. Products change and we are not going to pretend to speak for theirs, so check holla.world if that matters to you. What we can say is that this site opens in a browser tab today.

Do I need an account to use WhoChat Live?

No. There is no sign-up form. No confirmation email either, and no profile to build before you are allowed to see a face, because a guest session gets created for you quietly in the background as the page loads and that is the entire thing standing between you and a conversation. An account is optional. It only starts to matter later, if you want your settings and coins to follow you from a laptop to a phone.

Is it free?

Getting in is, and so are your first matches: no card, no trial, no payment screen between you and the camera. Straight about the rest: those free matches are a set number rather than an endless supply. Once they are gone, video matching runs on coins, which you can buy or collect free from the reward centre on a timer. Text matching does not draw on any of it.

Can I choose who I get matched with?

Not in the match itself. That part is random, and it is random on purpose, because the speed the whole format depends on comes from not narrowing anything down first. You press start and you take who you get. If choosing is the part you actually came for, an app that sells filtering as a feature will suit you better than this will, and we would rather say so than sell you a tab you close in twenty seconds.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Mobile browser, no app store, nothing to install. The permission prompt is the same one your phone already shows for any other site that wants a camera, and the layout here was built for a portrait screen, not squeezed down from a desktop one at the last minute.

What happens when I skip somebody?

The room closes. The next search starts immediately, they cannot message you afterwards, the two of you will not be put back together by the matcher, and there is no history sitting anywhere that either of you can open up and look at later. That is the mechanism. It is not a loophole in it.

Is anyone moderating this?

Yes, on what gets reported and on live signals, not on a recording, because there is no recording. It is 18+ and nudity closes the room. Filing a report takes one tap and no typing, since the session travels attached to it. Is it perfect? No. Anyone who tells you their random video chat is perfectly moderated is selling you something.
